PG County Executive Candidate Forum

On Jan. 30, a forum for candidates running to replace Senator Angela Alsobrooks as Prince George’s County Executive was held at the Laurel Boys & Girls Club. Ten of the twelve announced candidates were present: Former County Executive Rushern Baker (D), PG County States Attorney Aisha Braveboy (D), Marcellus Crews (D), Ron Hunt (D), chair of the Prince George’s County Council Jolene Ivey (D), George McDermott (R),  Albert Slocum (D), Tonya Sweat (D), Laurel High School graduate Alonzo Washington (D), and Jonathan White (R).

Voices of Laurel was represented, as Kevin was one of four moderators asking the candidates questions. He was the only local journalist invited to participate.

A large crowd of approximately 150 listened to the candidates and participated in a Q&A session with residents. Local activists Martin Mitchell and Janna Parker organized the event.

Merriweather Post Pavilion Call for Artifacts

We are planning to have a call for artifacts for our forthcoming book Merriweather Post Pavilion, The First 50 Years. If you have any posters, ticket stubs, programs, photos, or any other items from Merriweather between 1967 and 2017, and would like to be considered for inclusion in our book, let us know. We will notify the public on our Facebook page when we have a formal gathering to collect items (hopefully this summer) but, in the meantime, feel free to contact us if you have anything. Tony Denikos in Voices of Laurel

One of the local musicians profiled in Mark Opsasnick’s “Rock the Patuxent” column in our last issue (Winter 2025) was Laurel High School graduate Tony Denikos. Recently, while performing at Hank Dietle’s, on Rockville Pike, our friend John Mewshaw attended the concert and afterwards took a photo of Denikos with the article.

Call for Nominations for Laurel Light Award

Beginning this year, Voices of Laurel will present an annual Laurel Light Award to an individual, business, or organization that makes our hometown a better place. We were thrilled with readers’ nominations over the course of 2024, when we presented three awards. Ruth Walls, Cheryl Poulos, and Stillborn and Infant Loss Support (SAILS) were the previous recipients. Moving forward, only one award will be announced each year, which means that your nominations are extra special. We want to shine a light on the good deeds being done in our hometown—acts of kindness that too often go overlooked.

Let us know who you think deserves the 2025 Laurel Light Award at laurelhistoryboys@gmail.com, the Voices of Laurel Facebook page, or by mail at P.O. Box 759, Laurel, MD 20725.

Main Street Festival

We will be at our traditional spot in front of Oliver’s Old Towne Tavern for the Main Street Festival on May 10. Please stop by and say hello!

Board News

Our Board of Directors reported some notable achievements in the past few months:

  • Board member Angie Latham Kozlowski’s article, “Prime Location Could Not Seal Deal for Professional Sports Team to Call Howard County Home,” appeared in the January 2025 issue of The Business Monthly.

  • The Fairfax County Library invited Kevin, Rich, and Board member Jeff Krulik to do a presentation and book signing about our book, Capital Centre: A Retrospective. There will be a Q&A session after, and we will be joined by David Werth, who will talk about his days shooting photographs at Cap Centre concerts for Washington Rock Concert magazine. (June 8, FREE).

This is part of a series of dates of what we're calling our "Capital Centre: A Retrospective TOUR"—where we'll be appearing around the region with special guests from various facets of Capital Centre history. It's a chance to dig out your old concert t-shirts and join us to reminisce about the area's favorite arena! We'll have books for sale, with all three authors available to sign copies. Follow our Facebook page for more details coming soon.
