HoCo Seeks Improved Safety Along Dangerous Section of Route 1
The Maryland State Highway Administration recently transformed a short stretch of Route 1 near the entrance to Laurel Park by installing signs, posts, and paint to a car travel lane. According to the Baltimore Banner, the change is temporary and will evaluate the impact of the changes on aggressive driving and pedestrian and cyclist safety. Engineers will collect and evaluate data as part of the new statewide Complete Streets policy. The part being evaluated is “[a] roughly 1/3-mile section of Washington Boulevard, a bustling, and confusing section of Route 1...”
Savage Mill Hosts Latest Maryland Women’s Business Center
The Maryland Women’s Business Center, partnering with the Howard County Economic Development Authority and Howard County Executive’s office, recently launched its newest Retail Incubator Program in Savage Mill. The Shop Local program supports women entrepreneurs in developing their retail businesses and gaining market visibility. The business owners have access to retail space, mentorship, and a wide range of services. The partnership between MDBC and HCEDA ensures that women entrepreneurs have multiple avenues for support and empowerment. As a popular dining and event destination, Savage Mill offers a beautiful location with an established stream of potential customers seeking unique offerings from the existing artisan shops, galleries, and small businesses.
Route 1 Bus Line to Extend HoCo Route to Baltimore County
WMAR 2NEWS reported that the state of Maryland and Howard County received a $960,000 grant to buy two “heavy-duty” buses to extend a bus line by five miles on Howard County’s Route 1 into Baltimore County. Bus Route 409 currently runs about once an hour on weekdays and every two hours on Saturdays. It is part of the Regional Transportation Authority of Central Maryland, which runs buses between Columbia and the Savage/Jessup/Odenton/Hanover/Elkridge/Laurel areas.

New Resource Guide for Veterans and Military Families
The Howard County Department of Community Resources and Services’ (DCRS) Office of Veterans and Military Families recently expanded its Veterans Resource Guide. The guide now includes veteran-owned small businesses. The 2024 edition lists more than 200 nonprofits, government agencies, and veteran service organizations, plus a directory of veteran- and military-spouse owned businesses in the MD/VA/DC area that support veterans and military families.
Savage 7K Run/1-Mile Historic Walk Sunday, October 27th
Built of stone from the Little Patuxent River, Baldwin Hall is celebrating a century of serving as the community center of Savage, Maryland. Funds from the event help restore and maintain this historic building. Enjoy post-event music and homemade baked goods.
